jeffeosso Posted January 5, 2017 Share Posted January 5, 2017 I am on the cusp of buying plans for the aero canard SX (or FG) and would like to know if there are any owners/builders somewhat near me. A cozy would work just to try one on, and i'd be happy to pay for a joy ride, if possible. my mission is 3 adults, x-country, something like 150kts, IFR capable. I am still between the aero and the rv10 - if the rv10 "allowed" more engine choices, I would likely be my first choice, but io540 prices have gone crazy, and i would prefer a carb engine - due to simplicity of fuel system, to be honest with you. i have looked at the raptor, don't like the "buy the package, only, no other engine choices than a totally unproven auto conversion" and a highly complex set of systems - A/C (no deduct), must buy their avionics package (use it or not, no deduct) must buy their engine (same options) and pressurized (not interested, no deduct), etc.. frankly, looking for an as simple as practical (think pa28 cherokee) with as few additional failure points as possible - I want to accomplish a home build and FLY it, not spend good flying years "fixing" it, would rather build it and fly. macleodm3 Posted January 6, 2017 Share Posted January 6, 2017 If you can afford the build kits for the RV10, then I bet you canafford an engine. You can get an overhauled O-540 for $20k-30k and use that on your RV10. Its your plane, you build it, put the engine you want in it. Run the carburetor on the O-540.... or switch it to FI if you want better fuel economy. The RV10 is much easier to build and roomier inside than a Cozy or an Aerocanard. The Raptor isn't really an option because: 1 - It isn't an available kit yet and 2 - its going to cost between $130k and... what-- $250k? Raptor just wants your deposit... thats what the website says. If the RV10 is your first choice, then don't let engine prices affect which airplane you decide to build, because a 540 isn't that much more than a 360. You must craft an Aerocanard or a Cozy.... you put together an RV. Its sculpting vs. Legos. This, to me, is the biggest difference. Both are wonderful choices... Just to set the record straight: If you want a place in line for the Raptor then yes, you'll need to put down a deposit. There are different levels at which you can reserve a position with the safest being the escrowed deposit plan. Very low risk if you decide against it. Max liability is somewhere around $65 as I recall. As a startup, they have made a lot of progress for such an ambitious project. Good Idea on Peter's part to maintain the bi-weekly updates on YouTube. Also, the target market/Audience is the SR-22 folks. That said, it's going to be a while before your name will come up for a Raptor. You could be building a RV-10 next month and be in the air much sooner. The website mentions very little (if anything) about the progress that you guys have made recently. Basing things on the website, I don't see how anyone would place a deposit... its mostly digital images that are fairly easy to fake. I will need to check out their youtube videos and try to stop being cynical. I truly admire any person or group that is working on an actual new airplane, such as the Raptor. Its a risky way to make a living, but I hope that they create the Raptor and make millions in the process. Its a really nice and creative community. These guys and gals are like an extended family to me.... No, I've been working with Russ Emanis who organizes the Vacuum Infusion demo at Oshkosh. Russ has partnered with Jeff Kerlo to develop the single place canard (unnamed) which was the subject of our VI demo in 2016. It will be back in 2017. Jeff's fulltime job is working with Peter on the Raptor. Jeff heads up the tooling construction as well as creating parts from the molds. Currently Raptor Aircraft is all vacuum bag construction vs. Vacuum Infusion. The Raptor website has a blog that details everything they are doing since they acquired the building they are in back in Sept. 2015. I hope this works out well as it would be a great stimulus for the canard design. Check out Superior Air Parts, http://www.superiorairparts.com/xp-series-engine/engine-models/. The prices are reasonable, a new 360 engine, Fuel injected, for about $28,000 and they will let you build it with their supervision at their facility in Texas. They have a 215hp version as well.
