Sales I've seen

Recommended Posts

I was fortunate enough to make a visit with Kent today and look at his airplanes, including the very beautiful Long EZ for sale. Zipper as Kent calls it. Probably a rare experience to have a hangar open and view two canard aircraft built by the same person.

I'm just not ready yet, or I would become a new owner. It is a beautiful plane, clearly well built. Whoever gets that plane will be one lucky person.

Kent was very kind and gave me a ride in his Cozy. Closing in on 65 years, and I felt like a little kid. Fly's fantastic. My first time in a canard. I'll post up later on my experience. Thanks Kent!

Photobucket not playing nice - apparently no 3rd party images unless one pays. I'll see if I can find something better and post a picture.

Today's ebay.  A sad looking project that appears to have sat outside for a while judging by the rust on the nosewheel pivot.  I put a section of wing outside in the sun about 10 months ago.  The fiberglass still looks pretty good but the exposed foam is deteriorating on the surface.  I'm guessing this fuselage is usable and good cores could be cut out of the beat-up foam but you'd probably cut off the nose to make a long one, toss the canard and build a Roncz, and replace the instrument panel [Another case of cutting the instrument panel in advance for 1980's instruments]  Do I see the shadow of a MLG hoop behind the pile?

A lot of buyers want original plans so that's something.  Yeah, a scrounger could make something out of that but not at his price, me thinks.

From the Cozy Mail List:

Nancy Patrick stopped by my hangar again yesterday, in Longmont, Colorado. She has a Velocity project of her late husband’s that she wants to get rid of. She has said that it may be worth about $20K.

The project apparently has everything except the engine. No one has seen it, AFAIK.

She does not use email. She has not provided her address, but here is her phone number.

Thanks for any assistance.

This interesting Cozy/Aerocanard on Ebay today.  In S. Africa and with very few details.  For example, no engine pics of the turbo rotary.  I wonder about Ebay sellers.   In my experience, there is a period of courtship involved in selling a homebuilt which Ebay does not well-accommodate, but maybe there are buyers for a mail-order-bride who will say "Here is your $50K and I be over Friday to pick her up."

Ad sez:  "Cozy MKIV rotary turbo with electrical front lift retraction, electrical landing brake, MGL challenger with fully integrated autopilot, avioguard electrical supply, transponder, MGL radio, MGL RDAC engine monitoring, Mgl back up for altitude and airspeed."

And this EZ project on Barnstormers.  Long nose, Roncz canard, big canopy.  Looks pretty nice.  I am certain he's selling for not more than the price of his materials but there's still a lot of finishing, engine, and avionics to add.

Barnstormers today.  Wikipedia says 20 built, 5 flying.  Yep, it would be a fun piece of history to own.  Burt's site says 150 mph cruise (130 KTAS) with an O-320.  I'm sceptical an O-360 is going to get you another 30-40 mph but maybe so.  Sure would like to see the inside of it.

Seller of this EZ says "new price" but it's not one I have noticed before.

On another topic, the S. African Cozy/Rotary above has one bid at $35K.  The sale has already expired once on a $35K bid.  I see that the seller removed his $40,000 Buy-it-now price from the ad, however, I suspect his reserve is near $40K and it won't sell.   We'll see.

It would be fun to look up some of the tail numbers in this thread and see which ones have changed owners.  I have a tail-number Iphone app that will show the ownership.  Will have to play with it.

AT $185K, it seems a little expensive for an airplane in primer but I see he had it listed at $235K on Trade-a-plane.  That's quite a come-down!

https://www.trade-a-plane.com/mobile/search?category_level1=Multi+Engine+Piston&make=RUTAN&model=DEFIANT&listing_id=2266342&s-type=aircraft

It has some pricey parts.  Some things look a little slap-dash but could be improved fairly easily.

From yesterday's Cozybuilder's list.  I see that the Infinity retracts are going for $6k so $3K for the tub, spar, wheels, brakes and the rest sounds pretty decent.

I have come to the hard realization that I will not be able to complete my project. I have not done any meaningful building in more than 10 years.

I have, mostly, completed the "tub" and the center section spar. When I was actively building during the latter part of the 1990's and early 2000,s, I bought enough Bid and Uni fiberglass to complete the project (at least I believe I did). I also bought the "S" glass for the spars for the whole project (again, I believe I bought enough). Those materials were bought at the pricing at the time, thus, there is a savings over current pricing. The fiberglass has been wrapped in polyethylene sheeting and kept dry all these years. The "S" glass was always kept in a box and dry as well.

I also have the Infinity retractable main gear along with all the wheels, tires, inner-tubes, brakes, and hardware. There is an instructional video (VHS) and plans to beef up the center section spar. Also the plans and pump. The whole system as supplied by JD Newman of Infinity Aerospace.

Of course, the plans and drawings are included along with many extras. I have the turtle-back for for the taller canopy (Texas?). Two other canopies were made using this form. Ron Montgomery and I built his from it. The epoxy ratio pump, some peel ply, microballoons,

All tolled, I have $15,000. invested in the materials and parts. I will take $9,000.00 or best reasonable offer. The project is now residing in Izzy's hanger in Concord, NH. I will take a better inventory and figure out how to make an on-line folder that those interested may access to see what I have.

An EZ from today's Barnstormers:  I would guess that the guys who built EZs in the early 80's during the heart of the Rutan movement--let's say they were 35 years old--are now 70 and getting out of flying.  This particular airplane is an '84.  So there must be a bunch of them turning over in the next 10 years.  The earliest Cozy builders are not far behind.  I started mine (plans #150) in the early 90s.  I hope to fly it another 10 years or more.

If you are interested in buying one of these, there is a new-owner guide on the ez.org website.  It's quite a learning experience owning a fiberglass, pusher, experimental aircraft.  A builder of one has time to learn about them as he builds but a non-builder owner must really do some study, looking, and talking, to learn what they are about.  Almost every aspect of operating a canard pusher has been discussed over the years here on this site, at canardaviation.com, canardcommunity.com, Canard Pusher newsletters, Cozy newsletters, Central States Association newsletters, the Cozybuilders google group, the canard aviators forum.

Where does a new owner start?  I suggest reading all the old Canard Pushers, Nat's Cozy newsletters.  There is also lots of pertinent information on Marc's cozybuilders.org website.

Bose headsets: those are expensive--a couple thou right there.  The price looks like a reasonable starting point to me.

I came across this old ad. The plane is mine, and still for sale. Price is at $45K.

Today's Barnstormers.  No pics of the panel/interior.  That would have been nice.  You can do a lot to these older EZs: reengine them, cut out the old panel and glass in a new one--rebuilt things to your specs.  I suppose the biggest job is repainting one of them--not that this one needs paint.  I have stripped and repainted a Cozy and painted two others.  Repainting is a pretty big job because it usually involves re-filling and a lot of sanding before you can start with the primer.  I have never tried one of the soda blasting services but I'd certainly look into that if I needed to strip an airplane again.  Check Youtube for "media blasting".  It's like magic but I have heard you have to be careful with the blast pressure on a composite surface.  :-)

Here's the ebay link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/experimental-airplane-Quickie-tri-q-200/253257925698

The nosegear on my Tri-Q200 is heavier duty I suspect, but hard to tell from the pictures.
