I had a guy tell me once "With airplanes, all the money is in the engine."  The question is, what is a 1000 hour O-235 worth?

One more thing impacting sales:  I have noticed the price of canard airplanes getting depressingly cheap and attributed it to the economy but this article in Avweb below seems the more likely reason.  In 1980 the pilot population was 357479.  Now it is 47% lower at 188,000.  Also 1980 was the peak, I'd guess,  of interest in the Rutan designs.  A lot of those 1970's and 1980's builders are aging-out now and selling.

On the other hand, the price of materials seem at least 30-40% higher than when I built my Cozy so it seems like a great time to buy an airplane vs build one . . . but then you miss most of the fun.  Still, buying an older EZ and upgrading it can be a lot of fun, too.

Kent,

I am amazed at the ones the guys are asking 2 to 2 1/2 times the amount of what we see showing sold on sites like barnstormers or even the ones that show up on ebay repeatedly because the real buyers are not willing to pay the asking price or the bid up price by folks that had no intention of buying in the first place......or in the case of the long Ez with main retracts that recently sold and I see the new owner/buyer is now trying to sell it after flying it home .....always a head scratcher for sure

Excellent points about the cold hard reality of economics.

The other factor, I think, is that the Cozy is the only canard that is "really" available.  Sure you can build anything, but this is the perception IMO (which is also why I chose the Cozy IV plans as my first).

Yes, i think some sellers do not appreciate the economic and pilot numbers. At one time i thought i could get $10k more for my Cozy than i would probably get today.

James,

I bought the Eze out of CA. GREAT airplane this is my 3 canard and I wouldn't sell except momma isn't happy. She wasn't happy about me buying it but I had already made a deal with the seller and I like to keep my word! I fly it almost everyday but the weekend when I'm home. I fly corporate and have a mtc shop so I'm with it everyday. She just doesn't like the fact I have a toy that I cant bring home when we live on a 4500' grass runway.

Thanks,

Chris Cox

PS- trip home was great! 1 day 9.8 hrs less than $400 in fuel from CA-GA... You can look it up on Flightaware N504WB

This is Tim Lumpp's aircraft, and it's very nice - I've flown in it. Hope he gets what he's asking and starts raising the prices of COZY's again.

Woody (the author of that article) is in my EAA chapter and I eat BBQ with him most Fridays.  He makes some great points I hadn't really thought about before, as I thought the economics were the biggest driver in the decline of GA.  It's such multifaceted issue, and sadly as Woody points out the downward trend not likely to be reversible.

Not to everyone, as recent discussions on the c-a list have shown :-).

This is the nicest flying Long-EZ I've ever flown - not sure exactly what it was, but it just felt GOOD. And yes, it's a Roncz.

Optimistic price for a rolling fuselage and loose auto engine conversion, IMO.  If it was me, I'd buy the airplane bits and let the seller deal with the engine.  $5K-$6K maybe.  Found this quote with a google search for Ross PRSU

I live in Dallas, where I have two pers. friends running rotary's with Ross re-drives. One in a Velocity, one in a Long-Eze. Those re-drives have been back and forth to Ross's shop for bad seals, bearings new bell housings etc. enough times to get their own frequent flyer acct.

For the record, here it is.  No bids yet starting at $4060.  Looks pretty good.  I imagine the photos and signed plans (see ad) would satisfy the FAA to get a Repairman's Certificate if you document the rest pretty well.  There is still a lot to do on it with wiring, engine, and paint.  My experience is that inspectors mostly look at pictures.

This is an unfinished Varieze project.  It was been stored and worked on at hangars at Montgomery Field and Palomar Airport near San Diego, CA for a few years.  I have stored and worked on it in my garage for the past 6 years.  It comes with no formal builders logbooks but has digital photos and plans with each paragraph signed and dated as it was being built. The fiberglass work is excellent.  Has most structural parts to finish, including wings and engine cowl, except no ailerons and control tubing, but it has control pieces). See photos.  Selling "As Is"; "No Return"; Local Pickup only! I would suggest you come see it.  Its located here in Fallbrook, CA.

Here are some very old (20+ years) Cozy IV plans for sale at $250 on eBay1?ff3=2&pub=5575111616&toolid=10001&campid=5337630070&customid=&item=261619666557&mpt=[CACHEBUSTER].

Personally speaking I do not find the $250 discount worth the aged paper and the drawings that were rolled with the wrong side out.  Then again, maybe Aircraft Spruce would replace the drawings for ~$50.  Still...

Hat tip to Marc for this one at Controller.com for $10K AND IT"S ALL FINISHED!

http://www.controller.com/listingsdetail/aircraft-for-sale/COZY-MARK-IV/1999-COZY-MARK-IV/1355119.htm

Marc says not flyable and never will be, mount it on a pole.  That's harsh, Marc.  :-)   Lots of good parts there but it looks heavy.  I bet our late friend Zubair could do something with it, though.  RIP Zub.

It would be interesting to know the background on that one. I did a cozy archive search for builder Dan Moss and only saw one post from 1995.

There is something about fellows who  build these airplanes and do not become active in the various lists and sites that support them.   Their airplanes don't turn out as well.  Seeing, posting and talking about ideas raises the quality.

Some years ago, I inspected a Long-EZ built by a chap over a 20 year period.  This fellow apparently never went to see another EZ under construction, was not on any of the lists, hadn't flown himself for years and knew only what he saw in the Canard Pushers.  His airplane was heavy, ugly and had some weird features (that the builder was quite proud of).  Heck, I lived a few miles away and he never came to see my project.  Talk about ignoring some superb workmanship!   ;)

You know how an EZ/Cozy will usually not sit on three wheels without tipping back? This EZ would sit on three wheels and it took a good stout lift to get the nosewheel off the ground.  He had done such things as run grounding wires to every piece of metal on the airplane.  Someone told him this would be good for lightning protection, as I recall.

Oh well . . .

[tried to load pics but they must have some funky anti-copy code embedded]
