planecrazy
I have found a couple of builders are installing west pumps on mgs containers but the pump does not fit one of them properly but you can make it work -also I have seen someone use plastic containers for frezzing stuff and cutting a hole in the lids smaller than pump sizes and using them that way my ? Is can you use the west pumps like this and get proper ratio for mgs 335 (just want to see ) I know those guys are doing it and feel comfortable would any body else consider this action safe. Why pay $300 for a pump when when you can do this and take that money and buy more FOAM!! Hehehe( remember just asking) thanks for any remarks
TMann
I would consider the west pump but only as a method to disperse the material in preparation for weighing. If you can't afford a pump or a scale, you might as well stop the project until you have acquired one or the other. planecrazy
That was quick Tmann- so when ordering pump I tell them I will be using mgs 335 or 285 and they set it up for that system and I'm ready to pump:) is that how it works? Or should I use ez epoxy because I can use it on the entire build even sealing the fuel tanks like another builder is doing I believe it is Mfryer or waiter can't remember who was doing it what do you say? Big Steve
The type of epoxy you use is a personal decision. I Use eze poxy and am pretty happy with it. I am a cheapskate and it used to be a lot cheaper than the other epoxies. Now it is almost a wash. I am set up for it and all I have left to build is the strakes so I am sticking with eze poxy. If I was starting new I probably would use eze poxy still but the mgs stuff shure makes pretty parts and is supposed to wet out a whole lot better than eze poxy. If you dont want to spend the money for a pump use a scale they are cheap. steve
i use the West pumps. for the most part they are fine, just very slow. when i need a big mix i pull out the pumps and wight it by the cup full. if the ratio is the same i see no problem's with the switch from MSG-to-west pumps. so many mixing jobs are under a pint (1000) the Little pumps way out do the scale, i used the scales for 2/3rd of the build. TMann
The ratio pumps that Michael's Eng put out these days are adjustable so that part is not a problem. I have two pumps. One is the old style and the other is the new adjustable style. I ordered the required parts and converted the old style to an adjustable. I run fast hardener in one and slow in the other. As a result, I can make any blend on the fly. I would suggest getting a scale for now and wait for a used pump to come up for sale. And yes Steve, I did tip Babs (my UPS driver) a fin. jpolenek
I would suggest getting a scale for now and wait for a used pump to come up for sale. ...and the scale can still be useful later on for periodic verification/calibration of the pump. Big Steve
Kent Ashton has a pump for sale right now on the forum: http://www.canardzone.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13050 If the cost of an epoxy pump is too much for this project you better start building model planes because it gets a lot worse. You will be broke all the time trying to scrape up money for the next project. Orinoco
I use the West pumps and have a worm clamp on the resin side to get the correct ratio, but I always check it with a balance scale. Occasionally the pump will spit out a slug of air messing up the ratio, but its easy to adjust with the scale. I thought I might be able to use just the pump but after checking with the scale I would no way trust them alone. I could buy one of those expensive pumps too, but I'm another one of those cheepskapes! Starting chapter 11, Mike
Phil Kriley
The balance scale can be made from scraps and costs next to nothing. I use it for every batch of epoxy. antonio4231
I picked up a digital kitchen scale at my local Big Lots store. Eleven pound capacity or 5 Kg. Measures down fractional ounces. Place it inside a gallon size ziplock bag, I figure it will be good for the whole build. Price 12.00 plus tax. just my 2 cents. anthony
