But anyway would like to hear from you how one feels about redundancy

 

Redundancy is a very interesting topic.

 

How far should one go ?

 

Starting with two alternators, feeding two batteries, two ignition systems (one electronic and one mag??), double engine management instruments?

 

Should one work with a double bus? Suppose a verticalpower unit such as VP200 is installed. Would you still build redundancy in here aswell, like having an emergency bypass if the VP200 cuts out?

 

Double GPS for sure, I dont want to get lost. Double EFIS, Double radio's ? Transponder? Autopilot ( I guess not if this one fails it is allways possible to handfly )

 

But other stuff such as brakes, in this USAF report on the Long EZ, brakes were mentioned as a critical issue. So how about installing back up in this department ?

 

back up back up back up. It is very much like backing up your IT system, it s all worthless, untill the system does fail and the back up saves your neck.

You have to difine your mission and build the plane to suit it. These planes were originally designed as long distant day vfr sports cruisers. The Original varieze Burt said to put a solar panel on the top so you did not have to have an alternator to save weight. It was hand propped. Since then builders have added everything under the sun to increase versatility and the ability to fly anytime they want. They were not designed as heavy weather IFR machines. So tell yourself how you want to fly and build to suit. I am building a day vfr cruiser as light as I can make it the only redudunt Item will probably be an airspeed and an altimeter. A hand held radio and Gps. I dont want to fly in the clouds. I just want to go flying. STeve build on

Bob Nuckolls has given a lot of thought to redundancy. I used his book to wire my airplane (one alt, two batts, two electronic ignitions, main bus & essential bus). There is no need to double up on everything unless you're into ocean-crossing, I think.

True, with respect to redundancy, you only need one more of an indispensable item (or system) than the number you had before they all failed.
