Kink in the aileron?

I've read the archives and searched here but can't find an answer - where does the "kink" start, and how far into the wing from the trailing edge does it go?

 

I'm trying to mount my right aileron, and it sure looks to me like the trailing edge kink starts 5 inches outboard of the inboard aileron cut line, and continues towards the spar far enough that my inboard aileron hinge won't be perfectly straight unless I do some grinding on the inboard end.

 

What I've read in the archives leads me to believe that the kink starts AT the aileron, but mine is 5 inches further outboard...

 

Also, I found the following in newsletter #52, which basically says that the COZY should NOT have a kink...that it was designed out...I guess (hope) it was designed back in at some point...!

We are occasionally asked whether Long EZ or 3-place Cozy wings can be used on

the Mark IV, and we explain that they cannot. Although the Mark IV wings use

the same airfoils (modified Eppler), and are dimensionally the same outboard

of the strakes, there are some significant differences. First of all, the spar

caps have been made 20% thicker, for added strength. We also eliminated the

kink in the trailing edge, since this kink was not necessary to fit the

cowling (it was on the Long EZ). We also extended the wing root inboard 4" for

several reasons. The extra spacing between attach points obviously makes the

wing attach system stronger. It also allows those of us with shorter arms to

reach the inboard attach bolts more easily from inside the cockpit, and it

also makes the cowlings a more reasonable size. We considered that the

benefits of these changes far out-weighed any benefit of keeping the wings the

same as on the Long EZ.

My friend Ted, swore he would not have a kink in his and one wing ended up having it...the other didnt. I didnt cut my wings, so I wouldnt know how this can happen, but he was pissed and really scratching his head. It was one of the things that finally contributed to him stopping work on his whole project. Dont let that happen to you. He was a very conscientious builder and that led me to not want to build my own wings...despite many accomplished builders telling me how it's the easiest part of the airplane to build.

Not sure what the kinky fix is, but if you micro-fill the top later you still have the kink below, I would think. Fill then needed on each side I would guess.

It's a bummer.

One thing has been said to him, at least, mount them and fill them as best you can, and you wont notice it when you fly. It's a non-issue.

If you have the kink it starts at BL 67.5 on the mark 4 this is at the foam joint of the inboard block of foam. are the ailerons cut in the correct place?

As far as I know I cut the aileron in the correct place, but I guess I'm going to have to check. Isn't BL 67.5 the root rib where the linkages go?? If this is where the kink is supposed to be, then I'm totally hosed, and have no idea what I've done wrong. :(

i have the kink about 67 (the inner block of foam outboard seam)

i will check wing#2 tonight (glassing side one today) and see where the kink ends up, i will be there to help put it where i want it !:rolleyes:

dont worry about it, you can press it out (or in) with heat and clamps

quick edit after looking at the plans again the 7.6" is the measurment for the bottom of the wing. The top of the wing measusrement is 5.9 as per fig 46 page 19-8

Thanks Steve and Lynn - I checked and I do in fact have the aileron in the correct position, and the kink is where it is supposed to be, and it affects the forward inboard portion of the inboard aileron hinge just a little bit. I can adjust the opening a bit so that the hinges will be perfectly in line.

 

The kink in the trailing edge affects about 4-5 inches of the trailing edge of the aileron, but that's not a problem.

 

It's just disconcerting to read in a news letter that the kink was removed, only to find that it is very much still there. :confused:

Maybe I can shed some light on this issue. The Long-EZ has a kink both in the wing planform and in the vertical position of the trailing edge. The kink moves the trailing edge forward about 5/8" and up about 1". This kink was to allow the VariEze cowlings to fit on the Long-EZ. When Nat modified the wing for the Cozy IV, he eliminated the kink in the planform but not in the vertical. He moved the inboard root template 4" further inboard and stretched it in length to make the trailing edge stay at the same angle as the rest of the wing. He did not change the vertical position of the template or adjust the trailing edge at all in the vertical so it still has that part of the kink in it.

That explains it Steve! My trailing edge is dead-on straight in planform, but rises about an inch starting at BL 67.5.

i found the kink ! the te was not straite (close).

as the thread went from end to end i could see there was a bow in it

to flaten it out, i needed to sand mostly on the jc1(root block)

and as i sanded it, it got lower (becase the TE is a big V at one end)

So, if you want you kink gone just file your TE in or out .

ok, clear as mud right.....heres a pic

you can see from the bottom right, how sanding will lower the TE .

this will not work if you have a top skin on

this repair is done when you remove the TE hump.
