Crazycanuck Posted September 21, 2009 Share Posted September 21, 2009 This week my wife and I take possession of our first house and with it my future hanger. The house has a detached two car garage and an unfinished basement. After a long and slow negotiation, similar to what might occur at the UN Security Council, I think we have struck a deal that would give my wife full domain over the top two floors of the house provided that I have full access to the garage and basement for my building projects. So I think I am planning to setup two building centers, one in the basement for small parts and a second in the garage for the larger or dustier parts. The start of this project is a little overwhelming to say the least. I guess the first task is to insulate the garage properly and build a pair of work tables. Build one of those epoxy heaters. Then get an order into Aircraft Spruce for the first few chapters of materials. I want this project to roll along smoothly and quickly so I think the key here is a comfortable and clean working space. I am really looking forward to finally to getting started. The first was build in my basement and the second will be going in my garage. It is similar to many other have built except I added two features. First, it is built on castors to that I can move it around my shop. mfryer Posted October 5, 2009 Share Posted October 5, 2009 One think that I have found a little dissapointing with my work table is that it is a little difficult to clamp peices to it at times. I know that ACS has the chapters all set out, but I was wondering if there are any pointers about how many of the chapters to order initially. Are there any materials that I should just bulk order and if so how much? I am planning to go with the MGS epoxy system, newer version. I was thinking about ordering through Composites Canada. Does anybody in Canada have experience with Composites Canada, and which products can be safely replaced with a product from Composites Canada? Also, would they be cheaper that AC Spruce? Check with AirHeart for MGS, I believe they are the North American distributor. Don't order cloth with the chapter kits. They will cut that amount for each chapter, order the amount you want and remove it from the individual chapters. double check the front 3/4" seatback foam, ASS had twice as much as is needed. steve Posted October 7, 2009 Share Posted October 7, 2009 4-8 was my order. shipping was/is a big killer 50.00 dollar washer, if you know what i mean. order a roll of bid and a roll of uni i payed 100. for a semi to drop off my longerons (10feet long) cut the dumb things (ups is 8 feet i think) a big bucket full of an bolts would be cool in the start as-well order extra 7 ply find a 4'x4' of 1/8" 2024t3 locally (1/4" 2'x2') buy a started cozy save big(not as much fun as starting from scratch) lots more if you are moding it(strkes, FHC, wider,longer,rotary,est) Quote Steve M. I went in and spoke to them, and didn't get the feeling that you would necessarily get what you ordered. If it was close enough for boats, he wasn't going to put in the effort to make sure it was right for planes... That was my impression, at least. I bought my fibreglass (note, their BID/UNI is made by BFG rather than Hexel, but it is the same spec, you do need to mention the cloth style numbers rather than just BID/UNI for them to know what you mean though), also all my epoxy, my vac bag supplies and such. Can't get the core foams there for the most part (they only sell densities other than H80 by the full box as special order), although they did have the friable polyureathane foam which is spec'd in the plans in a couple places. My last experience with them was two years ago, so it may be dated, after you consider shipping and such, especially for epoxy (and sometimes even before for MGS as their distributer for N.A. is next door in Hamilton, I gather) they are cost competitive, perhaps less so for glass cloth depending on who you compare with. I've had quite the opposite experience with Composites Canada. The guy I spoke with took an interest in the specific needs of my Cozy projects, they stock a couple of the approved epoxy (or did last time I was there two years ago), including both MGS, and were frank about what they could get and what they couldn't. A lot of the volume in composite sales is for boats, so I can't blame them for having their business oriented towards them to some extent, but they did, at least of two years ago, consider the niche markets like us. Anyway, I think I will send them the materials list and see what they can supply. Both CC and ASS are within driving so I guess I can do a milk run to pickup all my materials once they are ordered. Also, I found a damn hole in my bid that went about 10 yds deep. Luckily I was able to utilize most of that anyway but it did kind of irk me. I am trying to itemize things for my first order. I'd like to get going for a 4-6 months without having to think about materials. Also, what about the fuel valve? I called and they basically shined me on so I did like you and built around it. aviator_edb Posted November 16, 2009 Share Posted November 16, 2009 I ordered chapters 4-8 in September and am not through chapter four yet. Its really hard to guage what to get based on time since everyone builds at different speeds. 4-8 will take you through a big chunk of the canoe.
