... on a boat.

I've finished up Chapter 8. Now it's in a container with the rest of our stuff on the way back home.

The good news is that we're being transferred home. The really crappy news is that I'm going home to unemployment. I've already been told that there are no jobs available within the company so their terminating me. What a fine reward for moving over seas and then training my replacement.

Crap.

So work on Cozy1200 may be a little slow for a while.

anyone hiring around NE Indiana?

That really sucks, Drew. I wish you all the best back here in the states.:irked:

Self confessed Wingnut.

Now think about it...wouldn't you rather LIVE your life, rather than watch someone else's, on Reality T.V.?

Get up off that couch!!! =)

Progress; Fuselage on all three, with outside and inside nearly complete. 8 inch extended nose. FHC done. Canard finished. ERacer wings done with blended winglets. IO540 starting rebuild. Mounting Spar. Starting strake ribs.

The bastards. Very shabby treatment. Hope it all comes together for you two, and the aircraft of course!

Seems a bizarre thing to do. I imagine there will be a long queue of clamouring volunteers next time they want somebody to go OS...:irked:

That's very unfortunate. Tell me the company and I'll boycott them if I can.

Anyway - what sort of work do you do? Not that I can help, but that would give others an idea of what you are looking for. Good luck, and welcome home!

Actually we're very well positioned to work through this. The only debt we have is a $8k student loan for my wife that is about $130 a month. full stop. Sold the house and cars when we moved abroad. And we have a reasonable saving that we were hoping to use for a down payment on a house.

Even before the news of the severance, we've planned to live with my in-laws while we settle back in. That will probably just be extended now. So our living expenses going forward will be very low.

We're in a whole lot better position this most in this circumstance.

On a positive note - just think of all the spare time you'll have....

Yes & No. I'm not going to set home and draw unemployment. My Dad & Father-In-Law both have small business. I'll work for them to bring in a little cash.

As for your implying that I could build, that is certainly a possibility. Even given current conditions, I'd feel comfortable taking a grand out of the saving to start building the Canard. Or think of all the metal bits I could build when your time rich and money poor. And I have a small metal lathe that's fun to use.

What kind of work?

I work for the world largest manufacture of submersible electric pumps and motors. If you have a water well, there's a 90% chance you have our motor.

I hold an engineering title, but I'm no engineer. I have a management degree in Entrepreneurship. I have the engineering title because of the type of work I do. I take care of any type of technical concern that a customer has. I teach and troubleshoot the use and application of our motors. Everything I know about motors and electricity was taught to me by the company. My value is in the ability to see the big picture and solve problems and relay that to the customer. My job level doesn't require an engineering degree, that's for those people actually designing the things. I would not have a clue how to do that.

So basically I solve problems and know how to explain that to the average installer in the field. I would not dare let most of our design engineers talk to the average laymen. ouch. I think Marc would be a mild example of this. I have a huge amount of respect for Marc, but sometimes his method can come across too strong for some newbies. But you know what, he's good at what he does.

I like what I do/did. I enjoy the customer interaction and challenge. I enjoy the public speaking. I presented 27 day-long training seminars in the last year. I wouldn't mind staying in the water systems business. For the most part it is a very stable and profitable industry. But I've learn to what for any opportunity and jump on the good ones. That's how I ended up living in Australia for 3 years by saying yes at the right time. So for starters, I'll be keeping an ear open for any sort of management, troubleshooting, problem-solving, training type roles, but I'm extremely flexible.

We had hoped and planned on moving back to Bluffton, IN. That's were our friends are and close to our families. But finding a job with reasonable pay in the region will probably be tough.

I know two engineers who worked for GM and both lost their jobs last week,,,,one had 29 years seniority!

One of my old coworkers had over 40 years in with the company. He did his apprenticeship with the company. He was canned in January. ouch.

I imagine there will be a long queue of clamouring volunteers next time they want somebody to go OS...

Yep. I think they are being a little shortsighted about the consequences.

Tell me the company and I'll boycott them if I can.

Don't do that I still have stock in the company. Although it half of what it use to be. :)

I've been doing programing for better than 27 years. Five years ago I was part of a layoff (one week before I closed on my new house.)

Tough times but you are in the right line of work ........ problem solving.

You'll be fine because it's just another problem to solve.

Keep us posted. I think you'll land on you feet!

Drew and Amy.

Very sorry to see you two leave our shores. We have gotten used to hearing the "Yanks" at our flyin's. You two turned up at more places there were canards than us locals, and were always good company.

Hope it works out well for you both back home.

Thanks for coming!

Will catch up again I am sure.

Chris.

Thanks for the kinds words.

Chris, we got to fly home on one of your A380 Business Class! (Nancy-Bird Walton) sp?

Then got screwed around at LAX. American Airlines canceled our flight then rebooked us in coach after the company paid full fare for Business. Not Happy.

Then at Indy, two of our checked bags had their wheels completely destroyed. Gone not even arrived. The baggage clerk said there is nothing they can do. Wheels aren't covered.

Oh just wait tell I file a complaint.... :bad: (where's the evil grin)

Overall happy to be home.

And yes for all your Aussies, we packed a share of souvenirs. Let's see

Oil skins coats (Drizabone)

sheepskin rugs

kangaro skins

kangarro hat

Crockadile dundee hat (of course)

didgeridoonas

abo wall painting

bomerangs

and the list goes on.

Glad to hear you are back home (?) Drew and Amy.

Tough times for sure, but you have each other ad just keep smiling :)

Drew, let me know when you have your lathe set-up again and we can discuss off-sets ;)

Settle back in, get your bearings and all will seem good. Think over those things you can do towards your build that require more time than money and determine whether you can make progress on them (unlike the rest of us time-poor people).

Will chat soon, and will see you at RR before you know it :)

Cheers,

Bruce.

Welcome back Drewby!

Sorry that it was under such circumstances though. The good news is you are nearby, you'll get to attend Osh once more, you are closer to Rough River and Wicks, you have a lot of time available for the plane.

See you around, C&R

go get stuffed Spod.

we declared it all. not a problem.

We didn't realize until we unpacked that we forgot to declare the jar of Vegemite! oops. We declared a jar one other time, but they didn't say anything. I don't know why they banned the stuff here. Nobody eats the stuff either way! :)

Vegimite.. If memory serves me correctly.. (hey.. What is my name.. Oh.. Now I remember) Doesn't Vegimite taste something in between V8 and a salt lick?

I also remember my Aussie friends liked to prepare everything with Peanut butter. I guess its an acquired taste. Great people though, really knew how to party.

Welcome back! Sorry to hear about the circumstances, good to hear you have all your bases covered.

Surprise. Wow. I normally don't get sucked in that easily. Maybe there was a reason to kick me out of the country. :)

Seriously. It's above urban legion. It's considered a fact by most Australians. That's just funny now.

Ugh, nightmares from my youth; I remember fighting with the nuns who forced us to eat that crap on toast (Marmite, a competitor) in school down in South Africa. Looked like axle grease, smelled like dog poop, tasted like a beef & yeast salt lick.

Viki had an uncle that lived in Iowa since she was a wee sprat. He got sent a kilo of vegemite every six months or so as a care package for most of his adult life. I don't think they ever actually disguised it or anything, but didn't advertise it. The urban legend I fell for was it wasn't allowed there because it is made from the crap left in the vat after beer is made...

Oh yeah, I love it. Nothing better than poached eggs on toast with vegemite on the toast!

You people crack me up ... so early in the morning too.

So, I won't do the Vegimite, since I don't do the Marmite :-)

Thanks for the recommendation

Well it didn't take too long for the Aussies to start chiming in on the Vegemite cue.... :)

It looks like I will be doing Rough River this year so,... I will bring a sample of Vegemite as the token Aussie. Hey Drew, what is your recommendation on what to wear, a kangaroo, crocodile and platypus hat whilst wearing a Drizabone?

The locals will have no difficulty in determining where they can gain a culinary education in Australian delicacies!

Spod, I also like Vegemite toast with sliced cheese..MMmmmmmm :P

You and Amy will be missed around here.

We now have more of a Canard group here in Melbourne than before you guys were around and that’s some sort of achievement ~ very much down to your openness and generosity. Oh yeah, you can say you were at the first Canard Muster too.

My fuel value is getting quite tight and I'm thinking Vegemite might be the answer? I can't believe people really eat it.

Currently in Brisbane after another six hour hop with the Long tied up next to a Quickie at Archerfield (YBAF). Some excitement getting over the 5000 ' hills with low cloud. Guess that’s another story of Priority One.
