Templates are not accurate in size ?!

Hi All,

Just wondering what your opinions are on the M series templates.

I am almost at the end of CH4 and cut the foreward landing gear bulkhead last night..

I used the written dimensions from the templates to draw out the shape with a pen on the foam rather than trace the template. Admittedly this took a lot longer than expected but was concerned about accuracy. It turns out once I was finished and had cut out the shape it was too short horizontally !! This means for sure that I had errored somewhere.I basically used the measurments as noted from the the centre line -> RHS and then duplicated symetrically. So what gives ? Either the template stated dimenstions are wrong or the template lines themselves are wrong. Any thoughts out there ?

i saw 10 or so bobo's in the 3rd set, so for the most part go by the m's.

you will see that later in the build the size wont mater because it will say "trim to fit and fill voids with flox"

on the gear leg i added the 1/4 rather than cutting it off(prop).

then i cut for the brake. hope this helps

one more thing. be sure you know the front from the back.

there is a 8 deg set back to the traling edge and it is hard to see.

i will draw you a pic so you will see what i mean

G'day

Steve - I'm not sure about your drawing. Where in chapter 4? I am building from the Open EZ templates and Terf CD and don't remember that back in chapter 4. I have finished 4,5,6,7,8,9,14 and will finish 10 in the next couple of weeks. Please point out where the picture you posted is in the plans.

Thanks, because I don't remember it.....

How short is it? I can check my dimensions of the assembled tomorrow (we're at the hospital right now, we just had our second daughter!!!).

I made copies of my M drawings and then cut them out (checking with original M's for accuracy) and traced onto the foam.

Like it was said earlier, there will be some trimming or filling during assembly of the fuselage.

Hi Jeff,

The template I am looking at is the M series 4&5 in the Cozy MK IV Third Edition plans.

oops, i was showing you the landing bow layed out on a table with the toes elevated to 8 deg, then with 2 speed squares pushed up on both sides you mark the dead center (shown by my arrows) but if you have it upside down this is the time you will see it rather then later when you cut the toes off.

but your post was on the lg bulk head not the lg it self.. right ?

  • 1 year later...

I am currently on chapter 6, trimming the bulkheads to fit the fuselage sides. While struggling to test-fit the F22 I went back to look at the drawings again.

I then discovered that there is a big difference between the width of F22 on the original M-drawing compared to the big full-size-drawings I bought from ACS. When I line up the drawings according to the center-line, the original M-drawing of F22 is 11 mm (0.43”) WIDER than the full-size-drawing. My F22 is made according to the full-size drawing and is 86cm wide (33.86”) while it should be 88.2 cm (34.72”) according to the original M-drawing.

Does anyone know what drawing that is correct? I haven’t found any place where the width of F22 is written. I have checked the IP and those drawings match 100%.

What's your dimensional error? Probably 1/4" short on each side can be dealt with by inserting small spacers and filling the gap with flox. I measured my M drawings (plans #150) and the measurements match the drawings pretty close.

Thread hi-jacker Erlend sez

My F22 is made according to the full-size drawing and is 86cm wide (33.86”) while it should be 88.2 cm (34.72”) according to the original M-drawing.

On my drawings, F-22 measures 16.8" from CL to edge (33.6") so I would say you're fine.

I've studied the answers I got regarding this matter and there is no conflict with the position of the lift-tabs when the F22 is 33.7" wide.

I have not found WHY the two drawings differ, but based on the answers I got there are several builders that have built the F22 based on the large drawings, hence got the most narrow version of F22 (33.7") instead of the 34.7" wide version from the original M-drawings.
