Compound turbo

Has anyone looked into this? It would help get any extra power out of the engine without adding the need for a intercooler and beefed up engine because of boosting like a normal turbo. Added weight,from the turbine, would still be there, but if you used a PSRU anyway, it could be incorporated into it.

 

Just a thought as I am no where near the engine stage.

I was wanting to hit that 250Hp area with a rotary but after considering the weight difference I decided that a third rotor was a much better option than a turbo system.

 

The engine is so simple that (in my judgement) the addition of a turbo totally negates the rationale for going with a rotary in the first place. I don't want any extra parts.

Please note the 260 hp parallel head Io540 version is at 410#. If you are headed there, that's the engine Cozy's want not the heavier angle head at 460#.

I just changed out the pistons to get 280+hp with no weight penalty.

 

Chris E gets blistering sppppeeeed out of his 0540 260hp in his Cozy. When we shot towards RR for a speed run last year, I glanced over & his GRT read 226 knots as we passed over the #'s.Chris said he was holding back. To me that felt wonderfully fasssst. :D Not your Dad's 172!!!!!

Progress; Fuselage on all three, with outside and inside nearly complete. 8 inch extended nose. FHC done. Canard finished. ERacer wings done with blended winglets. IO540 starting rebuild. Mounting Spar. Starting strake ribs.

I installed a IO-580E on a Glasair III and with the light weight starter and mags removed for electronic ignition it was 390 lbs. and 300 hp

I understand that you can do things to boost power and save weight.

I used the published weights as a method to even the playing field so to speak.

 

In other words: if you can save weight by using a lighter starter on a Lycoming, you can also save weight by using a lighter starter on a rotary.

 

The Lycoming weight is just for comparison purposes. (i.e. 300 HP of Lycoming vs. 300HP Mistral Rotary)

I am very pleased with the smooth power of the 3-rotor rotary engine. With a Catto fixed pitch prop (66" dia, 80" pitch) I get a takeoff roll of about 1300' at sea level, an easy cruise of 170 KTAS at 7500' with about 50% power and 9.5 gph (21 mpg), and a top speed of 210 KTAS.

You won't get a 200HP normally aspirated rotary engine for 290 lbs.

even if you did, you have to use it with a heavy C/S prop to get any take off performance. the rotaries don't have the low RPM hp of the aircraft engines. if fixed pitch is used on the rotaries they have to use a lesser pitch prop to get the same take off RPM and that limits the top speed.

Before we see peripheral ports, compound turbos, slide throttles and all the other fantasies that are discussed elsewhere I'd just like to see a few SUCCESSFUL stock, long term rotary installations that were not tinker toy hanger queens.

Just once I'd like to see somebody build a two, three rotor N/A or turbo RX without any mickey mouse glued on parts show up routinely at fly-ins.

People will be more impressed with your reliability than your top end.

If you are interested in a Mazda rotary engine do not listen to the pied pipers; build a relatively stock engine and fly it. When that is working really great for you, build another one and change one thing, swap it out and fly it.

Second that! The entire attraction to the rotary in my case is centered around the reliability.

The only place I have seen RX's that have routinely flown cross country to fly-ins has been at Tracy's Rotary Roundup. Nobody is going to take these things seriously until you see ten canards or whatevers show up with the same installation and you see them often enough to be familliar sights.

This is not going to happen as long as people are making unecessary mods that do nothing to improve reliability.

Work together to define a standard recipe, make it work, document it, share it. Share your experience with others so they understand what works and what does not work. I am not saying any one way or person is right but talk to enough experienced people to have a clue where you are going. Don't follow us, we have a "project" not a flying plane and that goes for any of the others out there with high profile opinions; how many engines have they themselves completed and run? Have they built a plane? Are they flying their own plane powered by an engine they built? Then why are you even listening to them about theoretical fantasy mods? Don't be somebody else's Crash Test Dummy :ROTFLMAO:

I would love to see that happen, I would love for it to be me but not in an ez. there was a day when I would have done that but after flying an ez now for many years I have come to realize that it is not the airframe to experiment with an engine. the off field landing success rate is not good. we see aircraft accident reports almost every day about aircraft that have come down out of the sky without power and many are aircraft engines. it is not usually the engine but the support system that fails. so to really test your new relatively stock rotary engine safely you would need a different airframe. so that is simple, just build a slow flying pusher with off field landing capabilities in which to test your new engine, test the engine and then install it along with all the exact same support systems in your newly completed beautiful cozy IV. so lets recap, to get a good reliable rotary engine in a Cozy all we need to do is build another plane, build a test engine, test it for many hours, install the exact same engine in the cozy, test it for many hours and then go flying with your family in your still and always to be experimental airplane with its experimental engine system. so it is easy to see why after someone spends a small fortune and half their adult life on an aircraft that they have dreamed of flying some day does not go with the rotary engine. even many of the few that did dream of the rotary and some of the ones that did install a rotary made a decision if they are going to fly their new Cozy in good health that they best put in a more proven reliable engine system. I applaud the ones that will install a rotary system, the ones that fly one and even the ones that have had their own reality check and choose to make theirs a hanger queen.

You second what? her point is that someone still needs to build and prove that they can be a reliable engine system.

If you have chosen it because of its know reliability, I believe you will have to build one and prove that to the rest of us.

so what RPM do you run to get 210 kts with a 66 x80 pitch prop? what airframe? how many flight hours on the engine?

Mistral is working to reach a certified status on their 3 rotor version.

 

It seems to me that at one point in time, there was a certified rotary available.

AT any rate, the RV boys seem to be running with them.
