Trying to just get some info for down the road...

Do fliers like the Skytec lightweight starters..I think they call them 'flyweight 149-NL.

How about a 60 amp alternator? B&C makes a good one...anybody heard of the Plane Power brand and its rep?

If a builder uses a mag on one side and EI on the other for costs sake...

How about Mags? Slick is the name that comes to mind.

FI- has got to be Airflow performance.

EI- Lightspeed plasma III?

Other items?

All electric instrumentation- no vacuum system...2nd alternator on the 'front side'? Amps?

Enquiring minds want to know...:)

Self confessed Wingnut.

Now think about it...wouldn't you rather LIVE your life, rather than watch someone else's, on Reality T.V.?

Get up off that couch!!! =)

Progress; Fuselage on all three, with outside and inside nearly complete. 8 inch extended nose. FHC done. Canard finished. ERacer wings done with blended winglets. IO540 starting rebuild. Mounting Spar. Starting strake ribs.

Sky tec or B&C starter are both good - have seen skytec break from backfire never seen broken B&C. which ever brand, you need geared starter for O-540. don't buy until you know the starter ring gear tooth size 149 0r 122 tooth count.

60 amp is plenty, many brands out there but B&C is very good but expensive but they always work out of the box .

mags are usually slick, they are lighter less money and smaller ( fit between motor and firewall better ) remember if you use an O-540 you need a 6 cylinder mag.

Airflow is very good but so is bendix, they work the same but if the engine if sooped up air flow per. can build to suit. for a stock engine there is no advantage to either one

EI does give big advantage in performance and fuel flow over mags. starts easier and runs smoother.

which ever brand of EI I would not use the mag hole sensor. the crank trigger type have been proven to be more dependable and there are no after market parts turning inside your engine this way. if a bearing goes out you could trash the whole engine. I had bearing go out in 150 hours and the second one was only 50 hours on brand new improved model sensor unit. switched to crank trigger and no more problems in 500 hours.

all electric is OK. two aternators not really needed if there are two batteries. two batteries are better for starting . and will last for hours on the new electronic instruments. depends on type of flying. if no IFR one alternator is OK

I'm running an O-320:

Alternator = Datsun - Hitachi LR-150-98 (55 amp)

Starter = Toyota Camry (Lester # 16236, Lucas # S9707) ( mates to a 122 tooth gear)

Left Mag = Bendix (Changing to P-Mag)

Right Mag = Jeff Rose EI

Carb = M4PA (Changing to Airflow Performance FI)

I have both crank and mag-hole triggers with my two Lightspeed EIs. I figured the alternator belt might come off some time and wipe out the crank trigger. Not sure if it has ever happened but I didn't want to trust one trigger. If you have a mag backup, yeah, the crank trigger is the way to go.

I have a Very Old O-320 (1955 Apache) The closest thing is an A1A. I replaced the original 7.5 pistons (150hp) with 8.5 (160hp).

Plugged the Prop Gov hole, Plugged the Vacumn hole, Oh Yah, replaced the crank about 10 years ago (cracked flange, see the article on my web site)

After I get flying and have things stabalized, I'll probably sell the Bendix mag, Carb, and a low pressure mechanical fuel pump.

Re Plane Power alternators

I have about 100 hours with the AL12-E160 and no problems. They have a good reputation at our airfield with some very fussy avionics installers and I’ve seen them in certified PA28 where I’m told they are excellent (I assume the AL12-F60) . I found them a very good company to deal with even sending me a small part I needed for free.
