Rudder Pedal "thru" bolt and CS-13 materail

I am planning to upgrade the bolts in my Dennis Oelman rudder pedals to taper pins.

Now, what about the "thru bolts" that form the bearing at the ends of the pedals near

the fuselage sides? Should they be upgraded to AN4 hardware? Or are the AN3 bolts sufficient?

Also, the CS-13. I assume they are steel and not aluminum. Duh.

Anyone have the specs on the CS-13?

I made some out of aluminum for aligning things, but will need steel versions of them later.

Thanks.

Isn't putting taper pins in the rudder pedals kind of over kill and maybe a little bit heavy? I can see putting them in the control system for the ailerons to stiffen things up a bit but in the rudder pedals you would not even notice a bit of slack. Just my .02 STeve

Anything more than put into the prototype is potentially overkill, after all it "works" in the prototype.

However the prototype is not perfect and there are a plethora of improvements.

It is always important to eliminate slop from the control system!!

Now let's look at the forces on the various components. The force on the aileron torque tubes are minor compared to the forces on the rudder torque tubes (those that connect the right and left rudder pedals together (in the cozy). If it were only the necessity to pull the rudders outward, the force is small, but don't forget that those torque tubes transmit the force to the master cylinders, a force which is significant.

If I had to decide between the two, I would (and will) do the rudders.

I Canardly contain myself!

I have made my rudder pedals with bolts. They have no play so I will not be using tapered pins. I have a mill and My holes are very accurate. I still think tapered pins in the rudders is over kill and very unnecessary. STeve

Wow! I can't believe the cost of taper pins from ACS. Over $5 per pin.

Yes, multiply that by 8 pins for the control tubes. Don't forget about the castellated nuts, special washers, and cotter pins. You will also need a taper reaming bit. The outcome is fantastic, well worth the expense IMO. Besides, it's pittance relative to other components. :o

Taper pins for the rudder pedals is a great idea, I'll have to remember that when I install my Oelman's.
