I've heard some people looking for more space for fuel. Anyone thought about incorporating large wheel pants as a fuel tank. The advantage as opposed to putting a drop tank type are that when they are on the wheel section, they don't get added as unsprung weight on your supension or wing structures, just the wheels.

 

If you don't need the extra fuel, put the smaller pants on.

 

Wouldn't have to eat any cabin room, as I read some brought the tank into the cabin a few inches.

Nice concept Hans but the brakes get extremely hot. So hot rotors are know to glow red at night. Probably not a good combination. Would make a great show if ignited while landing though.

Yeah, I thought about that too. It was just a thought. Use the pants as baggage pods maybe? If you are going to have the wheel pants there anyway causing drag, you might as well make them into something useful.

At RR this year, I thought I saw a combination fuel and baggage pod.

I heard a rumor that someone had built his pods with power and a fuel hookup. The idea was to have a fuel bladder in the pod. By using a bladder, he could switch between baggage or fuel depending on the mission required.

Hans Georg Schmid was using baggage pods as an extra fuel tanks (I heard about this) in his two trips around the world so it seems like the best option.

The mod they are speaking of is not protuding into the cockpit. The strakes have space available for baggage and elbow room. Moving the rib inboard a couple inches increases fuel capacity.

 

You really need to get a set of plans or view some of the builder sites to fully appreciate the construction and design but most of this has already been worked out in the plans.

May I ask why all these mental gymnastics? One out of two passengers, [let alone if you had 3 or 4 traveling] is going to have to "go" before the 5-6 hours of a typical long distance leg....what the heck is this capability for. TransAtlantic flights?

Oh yea, I forgot that was what it ... well, if you can ferry a 182 to Europe at 110kts and stop a lot due to capacity...why can't a stock Cozy? Buld the plane first and then worry about its 'limitations'. Most builders have way more limitations than this stock airplane.

use the spar. Its hollow in there and all you would have to do is seal it like the strakes. Sqeeze 15 gallons easily in there.

If I have a passenger with me, there is no need for extra fuel, as I generally limit legs to about 3 - 4 hours MAX.

 

The front seat is very comfortable, you can stretch your legs, or pull them back and sit with your knees in your chest. A lot of moving around and sitting exercises can be done in the front seat.

 

However, The rear seat occupant is stuck in the reclined position and cannot extent or stretch their legs;

 

The Rear seat is comfortable for about 1 hour. The second hour you start to get fidgety. The third hour is restless leg syndrome. The fourth hour your willing to do ANYTHING to get out and stretch your legs.

 

If I'm by myself on a "Long" cross country ( When I say Cross Country, I mean "Across the Country") I'll install the rear seat tank. This gives me 25 gallons and extends my range so I can easily make San Francisco to Detroit, non-stop in 10 - 12 hours.

 

If I have a passanger, I plan on stopping about every 3 hours for gas, food, and streach leg break. This trip will take about about 16 hours.

Heck, just throw on some HUGE armpit sumps when you're at that part of the build. I know one that looks like its got two long rectangle sumps with an upward sweep at the front.

Actually I'm working on getting plans for a cozy IV from the classifieds here. Basically just working on the actual shipping logistics right now.

 

The pants utility idea was just a thought to use otherwise useless space, it's there, might as well use it. The other mods I thought about on the other threads were just ideas rattling around in my head. Kind of thinking out loud. If I don't ask, how would I know what does and doesn't work? As it turns out in the end, there won't be TOO much deviation from the plans, isn't going to stop me from trying to get that extra somethin somethin out of it though. All in all I'm pretty sure I found the best compromise in what I want, but as I haven't started cutting foam and laying glass, this is the best time for me to design any changes. Heck, they put rocket engines on one of these things, I know not the same model, you don't think that might have been a little tweak of the plans?

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that the stock fuel tanks are more than enough for me, at five hours I'm trying to claw my way out of a car. The occasional extra fuel long flight option would be nice to have. I'm just trying to bounce ideas out there, for me or anyone else. This is a tuff crowd and some people don't want to try out their flame suit.

 

Here is a for instance, going from fixed gear to retracts. MUCH easier to do it while building instead of after.

 

So, any reinforcement needed, I want to do before I have to take a zaw zaw to it.

 

From the pictures I've seen, if you go with the infinity RG, the standard baggage pods won't fit, they take up the same area.

Retractable gear is inside from the ends of the strakes, pods mount to the wing, outboard of the gear.

Traveling with others you will probably find that with more than one bladder in the plane that someone will have the urge to go before you can use up the fuel. Try driving more than a three hour leg in the car before people start getting ancy. Besides, its a good opportunity to meet nice people and show off your cool plane in someplace you would have otherwise not stopped.

More importantly, will this plane suit your needs in a general way, if so you will have plenty of time to worry about the details as you build. For things like fuel systems you can build in contingencies for whatever alternate fuel source you might think you need, if you change your mind it will be there. Same for landing gear, put in the plans bulkheads and hard points, it gives you thinking room while you build, won't cost you any time, money or weight to have them.

The width and length of the fuselage are up front decisions, both will impact everything you do in your build so choose carefully.

Cozy Girrrl(s) have the Infinity Retracts installed.

A very fine, well educated choice I might add.

 

All of the truly great builders are going with that gear.
