Mazda 13B & 20B Engine Mounting Systems

Recommended Posts

We now have complete 13B/Renesis and 20B engine mounting systems for the Cozy Mk-IV, we are working on the tubular mount design to put these engines on the Long-ez as well.

The concept moves the starter over to the cold/plugs side getting the starter out of the way of radiator ducting. The common easy way has been to move the starter to the exhaust side but in the case of the turbo engines this is not healthy for the starter. We solved a design/structural issue preventing moving it to the cold side with an elegant staggered spacer.

The new redrive plate is a little smaller and lighter. This is a very robust mounting solution and comes out about a pound lighter than the former CCI mounting system.

Mounting kits are complete with all fasteners and vibration mounts.

If you can break away for the weekend, come down to Tracy Crooks Rotary Roundup and see and hear all about rotary powered aviation, last weekend of this month in Bell, Florida. We will be there with all of our mounting system hardware available.

Waiter, Thanks!

We are trying to determine position with respect to the firewall/CG.

We need to know how much closer an 0-360 would be to the firewall in a LE than an 0-290 or 0-320?

It also appears that the LE does not have the W/L depth below the engine that the Cozy does, therefore cooling will need to be by P-51 scoop anyway which will give the extra depth needed.

Next step is to publish the firewall reinforcement techniques which copy the Cozy Mk-IV style and the hardpoints. New firewall plans will be available.

TMann, I too am slurping...cuz Chrissi emailed me last week saying they are working on the 540 mount for the Cozy MarkIV...

....now I can just get theirs instead of sending my F.W.template to Velocity..and them farming it out. Low and behold my center top F.W. hardpoint ended up being in the exact 10 inch center to center position they were building the jig to! What luck=]

Sluuuuuuurp!

Ok - I admit I am in the wrong post-hole...over here in the rotary rastafarians....but it was...oh f'get it....

Self confessed Wingnut.

Now think about it...wouldn't you rather LIVE your life, rather than watch someone else's, on Reality T.V.?

Get up off that couch!!! =)

Progress; Fuselage on all three, with outside and inside nearly complete. 8 inch extended nose. FHC done. Canard finished. ERacer wings done with blended winglets. IO540 starting rebuild. Mounting Spar. Starting strake ribs.

Be aware that there are two different dynafocal mounts used on the Lycoming 540's. the engine mounting ears come in two different angles and are not interchangeable

Is a parallel head, a parallel head, a parallel head core all the same? I was under the impression that they were all the same core/same Dynafocal, same Lord mounts?...

The angle head is the heavier 540 engine and that is NOT the engine to put in the CozyIV. I am sure the Cozy girrrlz are savvy to this.

But Lynn, is this the two different cores, therefore two diff dynafocal mounts you are referring to?

the mounts on the 540's are removable and not cast with the case as on the 360's they bolt onto the case. there are two different types ( angles ) and this was selected buy the airframe manufacture . so it just depends what model engine you have. they can be changed as the bolt pattern on the engine is the same but beware they go for about $ 240 ( used ) for each mount bracket. as for the lord mounts they are too selected by the airframe manufacture and there are as many types as there are aircraft. many even have a different pt# for each mount position on an airframe. many of the mounts are eccentric and need to be mounted a certain way and again each mount is different in the way it is oriented on the airframe.

Lynn- I knew the mounts were important to make sure they were included as part of an engine "deal" for that 250 dollar reason...but didn't know there were two different types of mounts.

Are the Lord mount 'dough nuts' the equalizing part here? Or are there different Lord dough nuts for the two types of 540 core mounts. What are the names for the two diff mount arrangements?

Girrrls. What are the mounts that you are building to?

Velocity mentioned absolutely NOTHING about this- all they wanted was to know if it was a parallel or angle head engine....so I am glad this surfaced. I need to have everything match obviously.

Dennis,

This fixture was built around the same engine as Chris E's and another gentleman, Scott are building. I will get details from them to be certain.

We reverse engineered the jig from a mount we obtained from Scott in TX. His mounting points are the same as Chris's.

There are about 100 different lord mounts types that are use on the 540's for differing reasons as hardness, softness, dampening and some are a mixed combination of these . the hole in the mount is the same size. angle or straight is generally the determining factor but not always. I have known several builders the have had a mount built only to find out it is the wrong one.

Oh, the joy!!!! it appears I am going to be able burn through a delightful pile of money...hit and missing, to get my combination right.

Is there a secret handshake or tattoo that I need to get so that I can become one of the innercircle and thus decipher this great enigma.

Perhaps the mounts have serial#'s?....I need to assend the mountain and talk to a Guru-exspurt at mounting a 540.....

Just prooves my iguana like ignorance=]

BTW- Sorry to hijack you guyz 13b mount thread....=[

Ding!- A lightbulb just went off over my head!....Lynn- I will PM you about hiring you as my 540 jungle guide...Gracis regarding saving me a bunch of headaches!!!!=]

How well does the plate and oil pan seal? I do not know how many of these sandwich plate designs are in operation but i was wondering if they are prone to leaking. From my old drag racing days any time a small block Chevy was opened up it was a challenge to get the pan to seal on the first try. Thanks

Cleanliness is next to Godliness; clean clean clean then shave the remaining off with a single edged razor and finally a 3M scrubbie with some acetone.

Use the grey color form a gasket material, join immediatly, only tighten fasteners finger firm, clean excess, wait 24 hours then torque.

Don't know about our oil pan yet as I am going to weld up one from scratch.

I have found some heatsink extrusion that has fins on both sides so I thought since the cooling air goes by there it may be worth some free cooling.

Also been hearing great things about oil/water heat exchangers. Oil and water temps are more stable throughout climb/cruise, no need for a thermostat because at higher altitudes the oil keeps the water at a higher temp rather than the water running too cold but in climb and WOT keeps peaks lower. Best of all, put it wherever because it does not need the air.

About $795 from Ed Klepeis Tech Welding.
