Flush Rudder Bellhorn Plans

I have just found out that RAF has exhausted their supply of flush rudder bellhorn plans. As a result, I will look to have the plans scanned and made available as part of an Open-EZ download.

I don't mean to be bringer of bad news or anything, but aren't the internal runner bellhorn plans on the Terf CD's ????

 

If that is so, wont there be copyright issues with producing them as part of the OpenEZ project ???? I would think it would be the same as posting the PDF of the LongEZ plans.

 

Just a thought. Or you may just be talking about the full size templates, in which case I'll keep my trap shut.

No. The instructions are on 8-1/2" x 11" paper, with the drawings on 11" x 17" paper.

The plans are indeed on the TERF CD. HOWEVER, notice that the PDF on the CD shows the size of Page A-1 (a full scale page) to be 14" x 8.5 as opposed to the 17" x 8.5" that I received from RAF. Using the drawings from the TERF CD will result in incorrectly sized bellhorns.

 

Since the plans are on the TERF CD, I plan on adding only the full-size drawing to the Open-EZ download.

I was in process of re-writing the plans but noticed that the drawings would be difficult to get to the correct size from the pdf.

Before RAF put out plans I made my own version of the Internal Rudder bellhorns and sold plans.

 

Burt told me he like the idea better then Mike's..

 

I see great idea's on both sides of the designing table and maybe we could combine the two to make a better system. The big differece is that in my plans the original rudder cable and conduit never has to be changed in the location.

I'm making progress (as opposed to re-gress)

 

It comes down to; "Well, since I have it down, I may as well do this, and, oh yeah, I also wanted to do that." etc, etc, etc, etc,

 

I'm starting to see light at the end of the tunnel. Getting the gear installed and operational was probably the number one item as far as time and resources required. Thats done and I'm very happy with the results. '

 

Then the next big time consumer was getting the cowl shells designed and molded (done with that)

 

SO, Whats left to do;

 

1) Finish re-wiring the stuff in the engine compartment,

 

2) Cowl mounting lips and air ducting, sand and fill

 

3) Reinstall consoles in back seat,

 

4) make Oil heat system for thigh support

 

5) Install hidden bellhorns for the rudders,

 

6) Final paint

 

Sounds easy,

I guess my plans are actually installation instructions and the parts I sold for $175 but have found a way to get the machining done cheaper.

 

Since I had to come home an finish a drawing and some calculations for new airbox,,, well actually just the diffuser part, I'll see if I can locate the pdf for the IRL's. See, in both systems you needed a mechanism to allow the master cylinders to be compressed after reaching full rudder travel. I limited mine to the plans dimensions 4.25" and Mike allow his to increase to 6". After some math I found out there was not any real gain past 4.5".

 

So the first step is to hollow out an area in the winglet to gain access to the conduit. It requires you to remove the rudder. I'll incude one drawing only because it's all I have time for right now:o

The original cable comes into a new opening on the inboard side of the rudder.

 

The cable is then turned aft by a small pulley.

 

the cable continues aft to another pulley where the cable now turns back out to line up with the new rudder bellhorn.

Whew! I got lucky.

I ordered my hidden belhorn, Large Rudder, Ronz etc. back in Jan.

They didn't have the Long-Eze manual but I downloaded it from ez.org.

 

Seeing as these are RAF copyrighted plans......is there a problem publishing these?

I also have the original RAF hidden bellhorn plans. However, this is a design that NiceEZ came up with for the hidden bellhorns. His approach allows you to use the existing cable and housing.

Has anyone tried leaving the hidden belhorn as 1 piece aluminum, then connect with a SA362 Fork end

I figured on using a clevis pin through an oilite bearing.

Just wasn't sure if this (fork) arrangement would be secure enough or not.

The bellhorn can indeed be just a flat plate with a hole on the end, with a fork fitting swaged onto the rudder cable. Problem is, the fork fitting can't be too big. It's got to go into the wing. Too big a fitting and it will jam in the wing.

 

It's one of the reasons why the RAF design is what it is. The two end plates keep the thimble horizontal, low profile, for going into the wing.

 

Same applies to any fitting attached to the bellhorn.
