Variviggen

Hello all.......I am new to your forum and have had a long great interest in Canard Aircraft especially Rutan. I cannot fly due to eye problems but have instead chose to build RC aircraft. I have tried to find info on the Variviggen...particularly a good three view of it and have had no luck. Can any of you experts out there help out?

Burt Rutan's RAF will sell you plans for a RC Viggen for $14, but you'd better be quick.

Otherwise, for a bit more you may score a 3-view from Central States Association , the patron saint of Burt's orphan aircraft.

Okay Everyone; I Am New To To System. I Am Looking For A Set Of Variviggen Plans, Or An Unfinished Project To Modify Into A Four Seater. After 29 Years Working On The Ramp, The Kids Are Out And The Shop Is Being Built. I Keep Running Into Roadblocks For Detailed Info. Any Help Would Be Greatly Accepted.

Sounds like you're ready to go... but, a 4-place VariViggen? That would be quite the project in terms of time, complexity, etc. Why not build a current 4-place canard? There are several manufacturers to choose from.

Still, if you're hell-bent on it, you might want to ask Karoliina here what she found in her search from this thread (also an appropriate read for you): http://www.canardzone.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1186

You should also try the TERF CD -- who know's, may be complete enough for building: http://www.dragonaero.com/RAFCDROM.htm

You can also consider posting a formal 'Wanted to Buy' message in that section as well. Keep your eyes on eBay and online sites/forums (here's another www.condorsales.com), and you just might get lucky.

Unless you absolutely have your heart set on the VariViggan, I would seriously consider one of the other canards (Cozy, Aerocanard, Velocity, etc). I think you'll find that your build time (several thousand hours) and expenses (tens of thousands of dollars) will be less, plus you won't have to re-engineer the VV as a side by side.

I would also strongly recommend that you hitch a ride in the VV, The "others" will fly circles around the VV, and their a lot more docile.

Okay Gentleman;

Looks Like I Have A Lot More Research To Do, I Was Planing On Useing A Gm 4.3 With A Turbo On It. Also Incorporating Tech From Today. Does Anyone Know Of A Variviggen In Anderson Indiana? I Have Heard Rumors Of It But Never Seen It. Must Be A Phanthom.

Okay Gentleman

How dare you! :-)

...I Was Planing On Useing A Gm 4.3 With A Turbo On It.

Seems like a heavy engine for the HP produced. 434 pounds dry! http://www.enginepowersource.com/html/gm_4_3l_v6.htm

Also Incorporating Tech From Today.

Now that just might be the death of you. ;-)

No, but I do know of a Variviggen for sale in New England from EAA Chapter 106.

I agree w/Waiter 100%, but if you wanted, you could buy that plane and be flying next week (in theory).

You might be thinking about this one. It crashed a couple years ago and killed the pilot.

Yes, Contact Ron Smith in Anderson, Indiana. He has a flying Vari-Viggen and runs the Vari-Viggen group. I don't have his number but I have flown in his Viggen. You should be able to track him down with www.switchboard.com I also have a Viggen that's highly modified and you can see pics and specs at http://home.earthlink.net/~olyolson1/index.html
