Hi All,

I just received my diagrams and templates ($199.00) from Jeff Russell:D . The plan instructions were downloaded from the www.aerocad2.com site. The work-table is complete, shop wired for electrics and waiting on feeder power to be burried, and the hotbox is in-progress. I am preparing to order the first round of materials to get this thing going and look forward to sharing the progress, trials, and tribulations...because I know that I will have them:scared: . If you are building an Aerocanard, I would love to here from you:) .

How did you decide on the Aerocad, and what made it stand out from other designs?

Hi Daniel,

The primary reason for going with the Aerocanard plan is the additional 3.5 inches given to the folks in the rear seat. All members of my family are a little on the large side. We went to Rough River Kentucky for the Canard Fly-in they have their every year to get a sample sitting in a Cozy Mark IV. My wife and I were OK with the front seat positioning, but had some concerns about the rea seats. There are numbers of builders who are adding extra space to the fuselage that is beyond that specified in the plans. You only need go as far as the modifications forum on this site to realise that. I am not real comfortable with modifying and adding space and changing the form of the aircraft in that manner. It seems outside of my scope and modifications outside of the plans seem to quadruple the effort. Don't get me wrong, I have modifications in mind, such as retractible landing gear and a Mazda Rotary turboed for the powerplant. I am comfortable with both of those modifications due to my present experinece with the infinity gear being placed on my boss' Long EZ and the Mazda Rotary already flying on canards and other airframes with good support.

So the Plans Built Aerocanard offers the greatest advantage to me by having a plans built wider rear seat area. If I had the money, I would have gone to the Velocity family of airframes, but my current finacial standing will not allow the larger up-front investment...and I'm not getting any younger:sad: . So it is the largest, sweat-equity canard I can begin to build today and at $199.00 for the diagrams and templates with a free download of the instructions it just got better;) .

I hope that answered your question. If not, write me and I will attempt to clarify.

Rough River Kentucky is a must for anyone making comparisons. I think there is a forum on this site regarding the occassion.

Hi guys, (first post so read with care!)

Will,

Are you sure you get the wider rear seat with the plans built Aerocanard? My reading of the aerocad2 site is that the plans built is listed as the Aero Canard SB is the plans built version- see http://www.aerocad2.com/ features. This matches the Cozy dimensions. Hope you didn't just loose $199

I purchased Cozy IV plans AND Aerocanard SB/FG plans. The Aerocanard plans templates identify specifics on how to plans-build the Aerocanard FG (think it may now be called simply 'the Aerocanard'). I know this for certain, as I've built the widened landing gear bulkheads and compared with Cozy IV plans.

<soapbox ON>

  • Download the Aerocanard plans (from www.aerocad2.com) to get a feel for what you'll need to do to build the Aerocanard OR Cozy Mark IV.
  • Buy the Cozy IV plans (there are hundreds of Cozy IV builders and 6 plans-only Aerocanard builders).
  • If you want 3.5+ extra inches in the back, give www.aerocad2.com $200 for this modification.
  • Build per-plans entirely (centric to Cozy Mark IV plans)
  • Optionally, purchase prefab Aerocanard SB/FG or Cozy Mark IV (AKA 'Aerocanard SB') parts from www.aerocad.com (note the missing '2').
Whether you spend $500 or $700 on plans for a $75,000+ airplane is insignificant IMO. Just my $0.02.

Technically, I consider myself to be building a Cozy Mark IV with Aerocanard FG modifications. Jeff would call this an Aerocanard, but Nat would call it something else. It doesn't matter, really, as in the end I think it will be called the 'Matcho Canard #1'.

Will, I also forgot to say, "congratulations!" I think it's great that you jumped in with plans. Let me know if you have any questions on deciphering the rear widening drawings. I had to spend some time on those, as the Aerocanard FG drawings for the rear bulkheads can be confusing as they're nothing more than marked-up Cozy Mark IV drawings. This makes for some confusion over separate drawings for the Aerocanard FG option.

Hey Will ... I just got my drawing from Jeff too ... going over the shopping list and having a few probs finding the glass in the ACS cat. numbers just don't appear to be there so I'm not sure what to order and I can't see if its available locally. The wood pricing for raises a few questions too and it costs twice as much to order the half sheet as suggested in the plans. Would be cheaper if I could find someone local that was just starting and order the whole sheet ... splitting the cost we would get what we need for just at 15$ <LOL> vs the 65$ for the 1/4"x4'x4' sheet of birch!

Can't locate the screws and I can't find a listing for the 1/4"x2"x4" piece of 2024-T3 alum, guess its only available in the kit!!! <G>

HOPEFULLY I'll get the table done this weekend and start on the box and cabnet for storing the glass. Garage is ready pretty much ... still need to put in the ceiling and do a little more insulating ... considering adding to the front of the building ( 7') that would give me a 20'x20' work space but only about a 7' ceiling ... not too sure about raising the roof to 10' but you never know ... I might as well add more width to the building so I can park the assembled AC in there when I'm done. Damn this is fun!!!!

If you are building an Aerocanard, I would love to here from you:) .

Here I am ... will try to get a website started so I have an online log like some of the others ... they can be really helpful and serve a good purpose in the end when it comes time to show who built what to the inspectors. <LOL>

Have you gotten your SN too?

Yep!

In the diagrams and templates there is the SB size and the Extended FG size depicted. So you can build it either way. Or if you are real froggie, talk to JohnZ or others. John is adding a lot of inches right down the middle of the plan set. I am not that ambitious.:)

Wil,

I, too, am building an AeroCanard. I'm building from the kit and have most of the big pieces done. I'm moving now and will build a house and hangar to complete the project. This will put me out of commission for a few months though. I'm in Ft Lauderdale now and I am moving to Welaka, Fl which is about an hour drive south of Jax.

  • 1 month later...

I too have sent for Aerocanard plans and am eagerly awaiting their arrival. I have the workshop ready...can't wait!

I am also looking for Aerocanard (plans) builders to work along side via email anyways to push or be pushed to completion. My building experience is on a Velocity XL-FG. Four years into it and maybe two to go. Check out www.kal-soft.com/velocity if you like.

In case Chris Barber reads this...I know you by way of Andy. :)

Looking forward to the build

CFernandez.....is this Carlos????

Do I know Andy, heck, even though I have never met him I feel he is an old friend. I still have his really long permagrit sanding bar. I still have wings to sand/finish. A flight up to MI is a priority once I fly off the 40 hrs.

Welcome to the forum and the fun. I hope to get out to the hangar later today.......Andy is catching up with me again. ;)

You too may become adicted to the forums. They are a great resource and the fellowship is great. Congrats on the Aerocanard choice.

Give Andy my best and invite him to the forums....it is loney being the only Velo builder ;)

All the best

Noodles (I love that nickname),

The Velocity Carlos is referring to belongs to Andy Millin. Andy has been a huge help with my project (we have communicated though, email, mail and our webpages since I started building)

Now, and I could be wrong, Carlos is venturing into his own project. I guess he too bleeds epoxy.

.....still havn't made it to the hangar :( ....yet?

All the best,

Noodles,

I have been helping on the Velocity XL-FG project. It belongs to Andy. I used it to gain the skills needed to build something of my own ("I bleed epoxy..."). The Velocity has been a hoot to work on (along side Andy)!

I am actually leaving for Charleston, SC this afternoon and I expect templates and drawings to arrive just after I leave for the airport. :irked:

Oh well, it will be something to look forward to...

Nice to meet you. When Chris flys up to Michigan in his completed Velocity :D have him bring you and we can meet in person.

Welcome to the club!

I already have a question on the landing gear hard points...

I had a handful of questions about the AeroCanard hardpoints. The drawings were a slight challenge to understand as the SB and FG drawings are written on the same paper.

So let's have it, don't be bashful. :)

COOL - Congradulations, now its time to "Get to Work". ;)

How many people can actually say "They Built an Airplane, from scratch".

Waiter

Greetings,

I have received my "m" drawings for the aerocanard and my kit will be constructed sometime next month by the new owner Al, in St. Louis area (bowling green) under Jeff's tutelage. Mine will be an SX.

I am accumulating the parts now, including electronics (from a previous plane), elect nose gear, elect belly board, main and nose gear, and items too numerous to mention.

After some honeydos, I will start construction in earnest (other than an hour here and there in preparation)

I chose the Aerocanard mainly because of the kit availability, having spent 20 years building a dragonfly from scratch, and then modifying it extensively over and over again.:rolleyes: Everyone should build at least one plane from scratch.

I'm excited about the build and will do a lot of the work at home (bulkheads, gear reenforcement and tabs etc) When the Fusealge etc arrives, I will move the project to my hanger at Kenosha WI (ENW) where shortly thereafter it will start looking like an airplane. (fameous last words)

Build as much as you can at home. I was fortunate that I had an area large enough that I could completely build it at home.

On those days that I get off work and am tired, I'm not going to drive 30 minutes to the airport to work on the plane, But I will certianly get my coffie and walk out to the barn, even if to putz around and do nothing but look through a catalog or take some measurements.

Good luck with it
