Wayne Hicks Posted October 25, 2004 Share Posted October 25, 2004 It's really hard to concentrate on ATC and flight watch while intermittently listening to Top Gun. Most of my flying is done on IFR flight plans. That being said, the solution for me will be an MP3 player plugged in as auxiliary input. No sense hauling around CDs and the like. I will post some more pictures so you can see how it goes together. There are two 1/2" carbon and honeycomb shelves or trays that go side to side and are bolted to a carbon flange which is epoxied to the fuselage sides, and all the aluminum pieces that hold the avionics are fastened to them. Since the plans panel is structural, I wanted to make it as strong as possible. The lower tray is also fastened to a piece attatched to the wheel well, and to the carbon piece in the center.If I was starting from scratch, I would change some things, as there is a lot of new equipment available now....but I will stick with what I have or this project will never be finished.... Since then I have removed the Alpine CD player and opted for the MP3 input like Wayne mentions above. The audio panel has been swapped out for a PMA8000B with the music input on the front face of the unit. Also added but not viewable is a Garmin GDL69 weather datalink that interfaces with the MX-20. Van's actually has a great selection as well and the costs are good due to their volume - too bad Van can't sell those airplanes of his. I am not completely sold on the need for stby's with 2 independent EFIS systems, especially if they run on separate busses and one has a stby battery which is how I would plan to do it - just used to seeing stby's on the glass panel aircraft I have worked on over the years (military and business aircraft). Somehow this setup is very good in flight, everything is where you want it. Its NVFR and the next step is to go Full IFR which needs the TSO'ed GPS and a CDI... Frankly, I like the 296 better than the expensive 430/530s... Its just not legal for IFR. Anyone got a cheap Garmin 300XL and a 2" CDI which can go where the windup clock is on the right hand side? Not happy with the Falcon one I have which is hidden by the maps. The GRT's are the initial ones, I may upgrade to the high res ones at some stage but these are great as they are.
