well folks it looks good for a continental diesel in 2004, no bs, 315 or so lbs, I would like it sooner but if i have to paint first then so be it, I want this engine.

 

The cost will not be cheep, but it will be substancially below the french aerospatial

I was reading up on the new Diesel from TCM. Do you have any idea on the price???? and when it may be available. I see they are getting support from NASA to help it come to fruition

 

As well is the Deltahawk diesel the same one that is talked about on the back issues of the Cozy discussion group as long as 6-8 years ago that still hasn't made it to market? According to their website they are planning selling the 200Hp version for $24K sometime this year.

Well when I mention the price of the aerospatial(sp) they laugh, so I am hoping for 35 or so price tag. The final decision hasn't been made yet, but when it is, there will not be a vapor engine.

I want this engine so bad i can taste it! I have been promised engine #1 and no there is no waiting list, I was just promised it by someone that can follow through on his promise.

Information on the engine is little more tight lipped than when the nasa funding was involved. They have met the specs of the NASA funding and don't have to say any more.

What little i can say is the engine is flying in a cessna 337 and has met and exceeded all specs.

It is currently overweight, but the diet plan is in effect and should come in complete at 315 lbs and that I WANT THIS ENGINE!

Volvo make a 5 cylinder 2.3 20v Turbo Diesel, 160hp @4000rpm, 245lbft @1750rpm; 160kg alloy, water cooled. The same mass produced motor with a a non turbo petrol head has 400hp@9000rpm in race cars, and 800hp@6000rpm in turbo petrol race cars. I hope to achieve 200hp continous @<20,000ft, with 300hp available for take off.

Is it so heavy?

A Lycoming 540 makes 250hp and weighs in at 356 lbs.

A Lycoming 360 makes 200hp and weighs 270 lbs.

A Subaru making 180 hp weighs 340 lbs.

The Volvo will make 300hp and weighs 352 lbs.

The diesel should then use 50 lbs less fuel per hour than a petrol @ 200hp.

As for the prop, I'm going to run a 3 blade CSU with 50% reduction.

It's still a figment of my imagination at this point, along with the rest of it. My plan is to go hard out on it from June.

I want to build a canard, at the moment the cozy looks good, which design would you reccommend?

Is it possible to get plans for the Rutans ?

The Cozy looks like a nice plane. Here in NZ they look at you like you are a nutter if you start muttering about canards. It's all boring pipers and cessna's down here. Up in Auckland the flight school has bought Diamond A40's with Thielert 135hp turbodiesels, and apparently a twin; both with glass cockpits. The Thielert doesn't look like it could pull more than a Tomahawk. I'll go and have a look soon.

Do you happen to know the highest altitude anyone has taken a cozy to?

I think my gearbox will weigh 30lbs for the volvo D5.

Well, I sorta do, my tech advisor holds the worlds altitude record C1.a of 35,027 feet or 10,676 M. He did it in a long ez.

 

He had 30hp at that altitude and it was quite cold (about -60 f)

 

He was hoping for mountain waves that day and go to 50,000, but that didn't happen

I think if you could generate sea level pressure with fat turbo's and a little blower at 35,000 feet, and rig up a snazzy intercooler and get the charge air down to -50'F, that would give the air going in the motor a density altitude of minus 7000ft.

How about speed? The CAFE report said 190kts Vne. They look like they could go faster, is it aerodynamic or materiel limitation?

Flat out at FL350 would be 325 kts,running 13 gph, that would do me just fine. I was hoping for a 250 KIAS vne.

Well, ifin it is ready else turboed 360. The continental is 2 stroke turboed,fuel injected, single lever cs prop diesel. Holds sea level to 8000 feet, weighs in at about 315.

 

There are three of us building two planes, one for one and one for two.

 

The planes are currently absoloutly identical at this stage and we are on chap 20. Having partners is great, no one has taken a sick day and between the three of us we can usually scrape together a complete and fully functional brain.

 

Our progress is slow, but constant, plane day is saturday or Sunday, and in four years has only been cancelled 6 or 7 times.

What kind of prop you gonna' use for a speed range of 70 to 325 kts?

 

325 KTAS is about .56 Mach. Tip speeds would be supersonic unless you had a VERY short prop (which would now be substantially masked, so it wouldn't be of much use). You could do the math on rpm and prop radius. A 72" prop turning 2800 rpm would have a tip speed of about .9 mach. I believe critical mach for most props is something under .85 mach - closer to .8. Tip speed of .8 mach would occur at about 2500 rpm. What kind of engine/prop package would give you 185 IAS at 2500 rpm

 

BTW, Vne is flutter based and flutter is a function of both IAS and TAS, so at 350 KTAS you would be in pretty serious jeopardy of encountering flutter.

Where I come from a flutter is to go and waste your pay cheque betting on the dogs or ponies. Bad vibes eh? I'll keep well away.

I'm planning on using a CSU with a reduction gearbox of about 2:1 .The Volvo torque peaks at 1750 rpm, and horsepower peaks at 4000rpm. That would make the prop 1000 rpm for cruise and 2000 rpm for take off and landing, running a fat 3 or 4 blade prop.

Am I right in thinking that if the plane is already going mach 0.5, and critical speed is m0.8, then the tip speed must not be more than mO.3 greater than aircraft speed?

I think that makes the maximum blade disc diameter possible about 66 inches, but now I'm into blade angles etc and my head hurts terribly.

But i do know that the starship made 335kts with 5 blades, so I guess it must be possible.

Anyway I'll chat with a fundi who makes props and see what he says, but it's a while away yet before I need it.

How, precisely?? Sounds like you're WELL INTO the flutter domain. I would suspect that one could nibble around the edges of flutter by careful workmanship and not going too far over the line (edges being the key word here).

Somehow, for some amount of power and money and etc. etc. You're plowing new ground here for a homebuilt. There isn't a lot you can borrow from folks who have done the engineering and tough work. Are you sure you're up to it?

I was looking at the specs on the starship and the document i see says 318 kts at FL350, @1600rpm with an 8ft 8in diameter prop. So Burt must know something we don't (stating the obvious).

Flutter, I didn't know anything about it until I read your post, so I'cant really find a solution just yet, maybe re inforcing the airframe? I don't know.

Money, well i'd rather eat my feet than spend $30,000 on a Lycoming or Continental, and I'm really finding a plane for the motor rather than a motor for the plane. I'd rather spend the money on a prop with whistles, lights, and bells etc.

Will it happen? well there's only one way for me to find out, and that's to have a go.

I just ordered my first ever credit card to pay for the plans and materials.

I see on your profile it say's Velocity, Long EZ, and Cozy.

How would you compare the three? and do you know anything about the eracer? I'd be grateful for your opinion.
